Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi has recently unveiled its highly anticipated electric vehicle (EV), the SU7 sedan. With ambitions to compete with established automakers such as Tesla and Porsche, Xiaomi aims to make a mark in China’s competitive EV market.
Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, announced on the X social media platform that the Xiaomi SU7 is currently in trial production and will hit the domestic market in a few months. The company has invested over 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) in developing the SU7, positioning it as a strong contender against Tesla’s Model S and Porsche’s Taycan.
Xiaomi aims to become an industry leader in autonomous driving and has assembled a design team with experience from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle’s design integrates Xiaomi’s smartphones and internet-connected home appliances, creating a smart ecosystem known as ‘Human x Car x Home’. The SU7 is also compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad, CarPlay, and AirPlay.

The company plans to invest 20 billion yuan in research and development this year, with a focus on electric motor development and autonomous driving technology.
