Samsung, a key contender in the smartphone sector and a trailblazer in foldable phone innovation, has dismissed recent rumours suggesting the imminent launch of midrange foldable smartphones. Although initial reports suggested Samsung’s intention to unveil more economically priced foldable devices in 2024, with expected price ranges between $400 to $500, the tech giant has officially refuted these claims. Although earlier indications pointed towards Samsung’s intention to release more economical foldable devices, the latest company announcement implies that such midrange options may not be forthcoming. Samsung appears committed to maintaining its concentration on the current premium foldable series.
A Samsung spokesperson told Korea JoongAng Daily that the company has dismissed the idea of manufacturing foldable phones in the midrange price segment, denouncing the ongoing rumours as groundless. Additionally, despite speculations about a more affordable Galaxy Z Foldable model, the Galaxy Z FE (Fan Edition), after the launches of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, the spokesperson clarified that no concrete decisions have been reached concerning this prospective product.
Samsung entered the foldable phone market with the debut of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold in 2020, which significantly popularised this innovative concept. However, the steep pricing of these devices has restricted their availability to a wider range of consumers.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is priced at $999 (roughly Rs. 82,000), whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at $1,799 (approximately Rs. 1,47,000). In India, the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s starting price is Rs. 1,54,999, while the Galaxy Z Flip 5 begins at Rs. 99,999. Despite endeavours to enhance affordability by introducing features like the new Flex Hinge and an IPX8 water resistance rating, both devices persist as premium offerings.
Samsung’s recent rebuttal may have dashed hopes for the emergence of affordable foldable phones; however, the brand’s primary emphasis persists on high-end foldable devices. As the desire for foldable smartphones escalates among the general consumer base, the anticipation remains strong for Samsung to introduce more affordable options in the foldable phone category eventually.
