Chinese smartphone manufacturer Infinix is considering the possibility of local manufacturing for its laptops in India. The company, which entered the Indian laptop market in 2021, currently holds a 7-8% share on the popular e-commerce platform Flipkart. The company is in discussions with original design manufacturers (ODMs) to explore the feasibility of local laptop manufacturing in India within the next year. The brand, which is part of the Transsion Group, has been manufacturing smartphones in India since 2019 and aims to expand its production capabilities to include laptops. By venturing into local manufacturing, Infinix aims to comply with the policy changes that will restrict laptop imports from next year.
Infinix emphasises that maintaining product quality will remain a top priority even during local manufacturing. Infinix recognizes the need for a well-established ecosystem to ensure that the laptops meet the required quality standards. The Indian government has implemented an import management system, effective from November 1, 2023, which allows companies to import IT hardware products, including laptops, without restrictions for a year. However, starting from November 2024, import quantities will be curtailed each year, taking into account factors such as previous import volumes, local production, and exports from India. These import restrictions will be in place until 2030, with periodic reviews thereafter.
Infinix is not alone in its pursuit of local laptop manufacturing. Other major brands, including HP and Dell, are either ramping up their own manufacturing capabilities or partnering with electronics manufacturing service (EMS) providers to establish local production facilities. Intel has also collaborated with several Indian companies to accelerate laptop manufacturing in the country. These initiatives align with the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware products, which aims to attract investments and generate employment opportunities.
