Heidelberg Materials (HEIG.DE) has taken a momentous step within the construction realm with the introduction of its new brand, evoZero. Promoted as carbon-neutral cement, this launch signifies a strategic embrace of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, signifying a significant breakthrough in one of the most environmentally taxing sectors. The company disclosed that it is presently in the pre-selling stage, gearing up to introduce this innovative product to customers.

Dominik von Achten, the CEO of Heidelberg Materials, portrayed the introduction of evoZero as a pivotal move towards reducing carbon footprint within the industry. He highlighted the paramount importance of carbon capture and storage, labelling it as a groundbreaking innovation within the building materials sector. This positioning solidifies their company’s leadership in implementing this cutting-edge technology on a significant scale.

At the heart of Heidelberg Materials’ strategy is its Brevik facility in Norway, where advanced CCS technology is utilised to capture a significant share of CO2 emissions. The facility is expected to capture 400,000 tonnes of CO2 every year, effectively halving the plant’s overall emissions. This is hailed as the first cement achieving net zero CO2 emissions exclusively through the utilisation of carbon capture and storage (CCUS), without resorting to other compensatory measures in its carbon accounting.
